Upper Secondary School Combining Function and Aesthetics

The Assignment

Lerum Municipality chose a temporary school solution with lasting qualities to quickly establish capacity for upper secondary education at Dergården. The objective was high acoustic comfort, a strong learning environment and a design that harmonises with the surrounding park setting.

The Solution

In spring 2019, MG Link delivered two school buildings ready for occupancy by summer 2019. The municipality prioritised a well-balanced colour scheme and pitched roofs to enhance the architectural qualities.
A total of 47 modules provide approximately 1,700 m² including stairwells with lift access, common areas, and staff and technical rooms.

Function & Content

  • Arts programmes: classrooms and group rooms for music production, piano studio, and music and ensemble teaching
  • Health and social care programme: classrooms and group rooms
  • Adult education: mother tongue instruction and Swedish language courses
  • Building structure: main building over two storeys plus a single-storey wing building

Design & Comfort

High acoustic performance and a healthy indoor climate were key priorities, with layouts supporting both practical and theoretical teaching. The exterior is adapted to its surroundings to create a cohesive and harmonious expression.

Location & Context

The campus is set within a beautiful park environment within walking distance of the town centre and commuter rail. The school – often referred to as “Dergårdsgymnasiet” – has approximately 1,250 students and 170 staff members, organised into five school units.

Result

  • Rapid capacity expansion without compromising quality
  • Purpose-built facilities for arts programmes, vocational education and adult learning
  • Site-adapted design promoting a positive and attractive learning environment
