New Children’s Hospital – A Modular Building

The Assignment

Region Gävleborg is modernizing Hudiksvall Hospital. As part of this initiative, the hospital leased a three-storey modular healthcare facility for maternity, pediatric, and neonatal departments. The premises will be in use for approximately 7–10 years until a permanent hospital building is completed elsewhere on the site.

The Solution

MG Link delivered a three-storey modular building constructed on a former parking area. The structure was assembled in just two days in September – in collaboration with Moelven – and three months later, healthcare staff and patients were able to move in. The solution comprises 21 Swedish-manufactured, custom-built healthcare modules and 3 specially adapted stairwell modules, providing approximately 1,100 m² of clinical space.

Requirements and Standards

  • The region’s property management team imposed very high standards, including:
  • Acoustic classification and fire protection (each floor forms a separate fire compartment)
  • Hygiene and ventilation systems adapted for healthcare environments
  • Material selections and finishes designed for easy cleaning
  • Installations for medical gases, electrical systems, and communication infrastructure

All patient rooms are equipped in accordance with modern hospital standards for inpatient care.

Integration with the Existing Hospital

The building connects to the existing hospital on each floor. Elevators and stairwells in the main building are utilized, with direct access on the ground floor and newly constructed access corridors on the two upper floors. Each department therefore has its own dedicated connection to critical functions such as maternity, surgery, and adjacent units.

Result

  • Rapid time to operation: two-day installation, occupancy after three months
  • Safe care environment meeting high standards for hygiene, safety, and functionality
  • Flexible transitional solution providing purpose-built facilities while the permanent building is being planned and constructed
